How he works

Dr Harinarayanan treats bowel cancer, and cancer that has spread to a small number of places, using radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. He plans the treatment, oversees it and sees you throughout. Most of his patients come through a surgeon, another oncologist or a multidisciplinary team (an MDT, the meeting where specialists review a case together), and he is a core member of the regional bowel cancer MDT at Southampton.

His approach is precision: giving the highest useful dose to the cancer and the lowest possible dose to everything around it. That is what MR-Linac SABR is for, and it is why he trained for it.

Training

  • Medical training at Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy, then hospitals in London and the West Midlands.
  • Specialist oncology training across Wessex and London.
  • Postgraduate qualification in oncology from the Institute of Cancer Research, London.
  • Proton therapy clinical education at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • MR-Linac SABR accreditation from GenesisCare UK.

Research

He was principal investigator for APHRODITE, a completed national trial of organ-preserving radiotherapy in rectal cancer, which looked at whether suitable patients can keep their bowel and avoid a permanent stoma.
