MR-Linac SABR
MR-Linac SABR is radiotherapy given on a machine with an MRI scanner built in. The scanner shows the tumour and the healthy tissue around it while you are being treated, so the dose can be aimed tightly and the plan adjusted for that day. SABR stands for stereotactic ablative radiotherapy: a short course of very precise, high-dose radiotherapy aimed at a small, well-defined tumour. It is an established treatment across the UK for small cancers and for cancer that has spread to a few places. Modern techniques such as IMRT and VMAT shape the dose to the tumour and spare what is around it. Is MR-Linac SABR available on the NHS?
Generally not. The one exception is GenesisCare Oxford, which has a limited NHS contract and treats a small number of patients there on a compassionate basis. Everywhere else, access is private. He will tell you plainly whether an NHS route exists for you.
Do I need a referral?
Most patients come from their surgeon, oncologist or multidisciplinary team, and a referral letter with your scans makes the first appointment more useful. Insured patients need a referral for their insurer. Self-pay patients seeking a second opinion can contact the practice directly.
What does a consultation cost?
A new consultation is £275 and a follow-up £200. Scans, tests and treatment are billed by the hospital or GenesisCare, and you will know what to expect before anything is booked.
